2012 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Application Cycle is Open!
The 2012 application process is now open!
If you have any questions please contact Shaunda Ragland, sragland@apsanet.org or 202-483-2512 (ext 123).
Named in honor of the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize winner and former APSA President, Ralph J. Bunche, the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI) program goal is to encourage students to pursue academic careers in political science by helping to:
Enhance participants’ writing, research, and analytical skills and make them more competitive applicants for graduate school admissions and financial assistance;
Improve the students’ use of computers for statistical analysis of research data used in the study of political science; Expose interested and engaged students to issues in the discipline and profession of political science; Introduce participants to leading political scientists; Inform promising students about political science career opportunities and encourage applications to Ph.D. programs in political science. Each summer, the Institute gives 20 students a look at the world of graduate study with a program of two transferable credit courses, one in quantitative analysis and one in race and American politics, to introduce the intellectual demands of graduate school and political science research methods. For a final project for both courses, students prepare original, empirical research papers, and top students are given the opportunity to present their research at APSA’s Annual Meeting, with all expenses paid by the association.
Classes are held on the Duke University campus, where students have access to a fully equipped computer laboratory, library collections, and other university facilities. Educational activities range from formal classroom settings to informal dinners and lunches with prominent political scientists and Duke University faculty. A strong ethics component is included with readings, cases, debates, and lectures on issues within an academic setting.
RBSI Director Paula McClain, Professor of Political Science, and Professor of Public Policy and African and African American Studies at Duke University, teaches classes along with other colleagues from Duke University. Bunche students have uniformly praised the exceptional mentoring that they receive from Dr. McClain and other Bunche faculty.
Since good performance on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is key to admission to and funding for graduate school, Graduate Record Exam test-taking strategies are provided by Princeton Review.
At the end of the Institute, representatives from a number of leading Ph.D. granting institutions come from across the country to participate in a recruitment fair. They visit with Bunche students, provide information about their doctoral programs, and discuss admissions concerns with the students.
For the duration of the Institute, RBSI provides full support of tuition, health insurance, transportation, room and board in a dormitory double room, books, and instructional materials. Participants will also receive an allocation for food expenses, in addition to a weekly stipend.
Who is Eligible for the APSA Ralph Bunche Program?
The program targets students from racial/ethnic groups that are significantly underrepresented in science in the United States, e.g. African American, Latino/a, Native American, and Pacific Island students. All students who are members of these groups, or who are interested in broadening participation in political science by students from underrepresented minority populations and pursuing scholarship on issues affecting under-represented groups, are eligible to apply. Applicants must be:
United States citizens.
Completing their junior year of undergraduate study.
Majoring in political science or a related discipline.
Have an interest in attending graduate school in political science.

Third Annual Undergraduate Conference: Communications Technologies and Conflict Dynamics: Continuity or Change?
April 19, 2012
Research Hall, Fairfax Campus
The last couple of years have witnessed multiple events which suggest that new communications technologies, including mobile phones, the Internet, and social media platforms, are playing a new role in the relationships between people, communities and societies. When discussing the Arab Spring; the spring 2011 riots that swept first through London and later through other cities in England; the San Francisco Bay area BART system shutting down mobile phone coverage as demonstrators were travelling to protest sites; the tragic events on the Rutgers University campus when a young man committed suicide following the internet broadcast of his homosexual encounter; or the Chinese government’s use of social media platforms as a new form of surveillance; and many other current events it is hard to escape the presence of new communications technologies. But what is their impact on conflict dynamics? Are the new communications technologies fundamentally reshaping how people, communities, and societies mobilize and engage others? Or has the role of these new technologies in shaping social mobilization and conflict been overstated and overplayed by the media?
Call for Papers
The School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (S-CAR) at George Mason University invites undergraduate students to participate in the Third Annual Undergraduate Conference by submitting a research paper, multimedia project, performance, or an exhibit for presentation on this year’s theme, “Communications Technologies and Conflict Dynamics: Continuity or Change?” Students are asked to submit abstracts for papers or projects that address issues or topics related to this theme. Such topics may include but not be limited to: Social media and social mobilization; protests and riots; transnational activism; community relations; cyber-bullying; electronic platforms and government surveillance; and many more. For additional guidelines, visit the S-CAR website.
Submission of Abstracts or Description of Project
Papers and projects will be accepted based on the abstracts submitted. Students whose papers are accepted will have the opportunity to present their papers on a panel at the conference. All abstracts of proposed papers and projects should be submitted to the S-CAR Undergraduate Program by December 5, 2011 via this information form: http://goo.gl/NJqrC
Abstracts should be 200 to 500 words and address the key components of your research paper or project.
